It's May, it's spring, it's beautiful out. And last weekend's steady rain, and some white stuff, were a welcome sight for everyone. I love May as the bugs aren't too rampant yet, the sun is out, things are turning green and everyone, including the birds, are happy and singing.
UCHS badminton is into playoffs and the completion of their season. Regional playdowns are in Unity this weekend. Those advancing will move on to provincial playdowns on May 12. The track club is practising leading up to their track meet, with provincials only a month away.
UCHS hosted their basketball banquet and handed out awards to players this week. Next week the spring football camp will be held, concluding with the football ID camp May 12th.
UCHS 50th anniversary celebration will be held May 17. UCHS staff and alumni will host guests for a variety of activities, as well as viewing the school and reviewing memorabilia.
This weekend will be busy at the ball diamonds. Saturday both softball and baseball divisions will be holding camps for participants. Sunday is Minor Ball Day with every team slated for at least one game from 10 a.m. until the last games at 6 p.m. Organizers are also hoping to unveil the new washroom project that has been under construction for the past while. It's a long overdue facility and will be a welcome addition to the already fantastic regional park/ball diamonds area. Come out and enjoy a great day of ball games, visiting with your neighbours and having a snack at the booth while you watch.
The slo-pitch league will begin tomorrow and run through until the end of June. The annual Miners slo-Pitch tournament is slated for May 25-27 at the ball diamonds in Unity.
Golf season is upon us. Everyone is welcome to take in a round or two at the Unity Golf Club. Senior golf starts May 1 with a 1 p.m. tee time. Ladies' night also begins May 1 with 5:30 and 6 p.m. tee times. Men's night starts May 2 with their tee times beginning between 5:30 and 6 p.m. The club will host several tournaments throughout the year as well. The Rivers West District for Sports, Culture and Recreation held their third annual volunteer recognition dinner and program in Unity at April 25. A variety of folks were honoured throughout the region including communities of Rosetown, St. Walburg, Herschel, Radisson and Wilkie. Three Unity recipients were on the honour roll as well - the Unity Pee Wee Lazers 2011 Provincial hockey team, the 2011 SaskTel Northern Men's Curling Championship Committee and Arlene Southgate, who earned the well deserved All Around Volunteer of the Year award. The evening featured a delicious supper, fantastic local entertainment, award ceremony and door prizes. Congratulations to all winners for some well deserved recognition.
The Unity Health Care Foundation is looking for financial support for the cost of installing computerized radiography at the Unity Health Centre x-ray department. The UHCF has funded this project to a tune of $93,000 but will need your financial support to replenish their reserves. The UHCF has supported the delivery of health care services in this community for nearly 25 years contributing almost $1.3 million, with your help.
As part of the UN's designation of 2012 as International Year of the Cooperatives and Saskatchewan Co-operatives declaring the last week of May as Co-operative Week of Volunteering, Unity Credit Union and Delta Co-op have partnered for a project that is sure to excite the residents of Unity and surrounding areas. Roughriders Chris Getzlaff and Keith Shologan will be on hand for a kick off barbecue to help raise awareness of the volunteer project and campaign. It's your chance for a photo opportunity, an autograph, join fellow Rider fans and residents for a meal and take part in the fun.
Coffee row folk are keeping discussion lively with hockey talk - whose out, whose in, who will advance, who will end up in the final, who's the dirtiest player, who scored the best goal and how about that Lashburn kid, Holtby? They are also discussing ball season whether it's the local diamonds action or the major leagues. And, the beginning of seeding season certainly brings about a variety of discussion ranging from moisture, to crops planted, to speculating on the growing season itself.
