Bill Epp sculpture donated to commemorate Radisson centennial

The Megabowl that Colonsay, Allan and Borden Volleyball teams participated in Oct. 9 raised over $5,000 for the Saskatchewan Children's Foundation. There were many different fundraising events going on in the different schools and they are to be commended for raising that amount.

Upcoming fowl suppers in the area are Maymont United Church Oct. 20 at 5 p.m. at Maymont School Gym; Speers United Church, at Speers Rec Hall, Oct. 23, starting at 5 p.m.; Borden Lions, Nov. 17; and Radisson recreation board, Nov. 23.

The Town of Radisson is having a special fall celebration Oct. 18 at the town hall. The event kicks off with the unveiling of a remarkable sculpture of a black bear, created by renowned artist Bill Epp and graciously donated to the Town of Radisson by his wife Betty, to commemorate the Radisson Centennial 2013.

The celebration starts with cocktails at 5 p.m., the unveiling at 6 p.m. with a roast beef dinner and entertainment afterwards. Radisson is celebrating the blessings of an abundant harvest, a very successful centennial celebration in August and the generosity of the Epp Family.

Mr. Epp was born in Glenbush in 1930, was a professor at the University of Saskatchewan and a founding member of the Prairie Sculptor's Association. He had a strong influence on many contemporary sculptors and artists.

He travelled and studied in many continents and worked in multiple mediums, but is best known for his bronze sculptures. Epp was commissioned to create many monuments across Canada and abroad during his illustrious career, passing away in 1995.

Dinner tickets are $5, limited to 165 people and available at the town office, 306-827-2218, or at Wenner's Foods.

In celebration of their 20th anniversary, the Borden Community Health Clinic held a barbecue through the noon hour Oct. 8, serving close to 250 burgers along with chips, cake and beverages. Many of the students and staff attended from Borden School and clients of the health centre from Borden, Langham and Radisson area were in attendance.

Carol Konchuk, the receptionist at the Health Centre for many years, retired Oct. 11.

Borden Friendship Club held their first monthly Kaiser tournament Oct. 8, with 12 out to enjoy the game. Winners were Jean Hryniuk of Borden and Justin Katerynch from Langham. Kaiser/cards are every Tuesday at 7 p.m. and tournaments are held the second Tuesday of each month.

The seniors' harvest tea and bake sale is Oct. 22 in the clubroom at 2 p.m.

Flu shots will be available in the Borden Community Centre Oct. 22, starting at 3 p.m.

Radisson Royal Purple meeting held Oct. 7 had a special visitor - Supreme Honoured Royal Lady Margaret Brown from Lloydminster. Prior to the meeting in the town office, five ladies enjoyed supper together with SHRL Brown at a local restaurant.

At the meeting, the ladies finalized the Remembrance Day Service for Nov. 11 at 10:45 a.m. at Radisson Hall with Pastor Bornhuse presiding. The RP provides the lunch.

Santa Claus Day was set for Dec. 14, when the RP hold a tea, bake sale and hamper raffle at 2 p.m. in the hall and Santa brings candy bags for all the kids out on the street.

SHRL Brown spoke on her work as supreme, some of her travels and her visit to Saskatoon where she toured Ronald McDonald House, Hands on Ministry and SPARC, a national charity at the university that helps parents and teachers dealing with deafness in children. The RP and Elks donate to SPARC.

SHRL Brown's motto for 2013-14 is Pride in our Past, Promise in our Future and she presented each lady with her pin. In lieu of a gift or mileage, Radisson will send a donation to the Elks and Royal Purple Fund for Children.

The Lodge sold and returned five raffle books for the Walk-A-Thon to be held in Moose Jaw Oct. 19.

The next meeting, Nov. 4 will be past HRLs night and the members will eat out at a local restaurant before the meeting.
