The Borden Friendship Club held their first bingo of the season Nov. 21 with quite a number out to play in the cold night. Winners received $15 and tiebreakers a consolation prize. Game winners were, from Langham, Mary Ostachoff and Shirley Brylinski (twice) and, from Borden, Audrey (twice) and Gerry Duda and Sandra Dickson with three wins. Lottie Petriew won the jackpot consolation of $20.
The next bingo is a Christmas one Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. in the club room and there will be prizes. In 2014 the bingos will be Jan. 23, Feb. 20 and March 20. The Borden Seniors' Club Christmas supper is Dec. 10 at 6 p.m. There will be no December potluck supper.
The Borden Friendship Club had over 50 out for their potluck supper and local talent night Nov. 27. The candles on the cakes brought by Helen Sutherland and Judy Latimer were blown out by Bev Assman, Irene Krivoshein and Marlene Derbawka. Eileen Petrun as Loretta Lynn and Jean Hryniuk as Paul, the poor farmer, were MCs.
First up was Rose Mandziak singing four Irish ballads. Ed Neufeld and Art Flath told jokes. Laura Loeppky and Cheryl Larner acted out a skit: That's Good; No, That's Bad. Sandy Long read about "and then it's winter," talking about your life. Marlene Derbawka sang three songs, then Stephen joined in for a Ukrainian song. Ruben Rempel told the story about the mayo jar and two cups of coffee, comparing ingredients to our lives.
Ann Brand told some stories and jokes. Elizabeth Derksen acted out My First Experience of Milking a Cow. Ed Neufeld played three lively tunes on his fiddle. Jean Sawchyn had a reading from Gopher Tales. Anne Palmer read Blessed are Those Who Remember. Velora Neufeld gave Daddy's Ten Rules for Dating. Ruby Wall played the piano for Peter Thiessen to sing Go Tell it on the Mountain and Birthday of a King. Ed and Art each told another joke, Jean Hryniuk had a reading, Bless Canada, and then Eileen sang. The evening closed with Ruby and Lew Wall leading in carol singing.
Condolences go to relatives of Helen Walker at Borden, Radisson and Langham. Helen Walker passed away Nov. 19, at the Langham Seniors' Home, at the age of 88. Helen grew up in Radisson, then married Art Walker of the Borden area and continued living on the farm until poor health had her first living in the Borden Care Home and then in Langham. The funeral service was held at St. Vincent of Lerins Orthodox Church in Saskatoon with prayers Nov. 24, service Nov. 25 and burial at Borden.
The Borden Lions held their annual Festival of Music in the community centre Dec. 1, with John Buswell as MC. Peter Thiessen, with his wife Mary playing piano, sang Joy to the World and Birthday of a King. Aaron Polichuk played two piano selections from Schumann; Avery Fairbrother played guitar and sang Luckenbach, Texas, Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer and You are My Sunshine.
Rose Mandziak sang O Christmas Tree and Jingle Bell Rock. Martin Whitbread told his annual Christmas story called The Broken Ballerina, about a Down's Syndrome child and a Christmas ornament. The Rempel Family - Ruben, Jaelynn, Janeen and her husband Kurt - sang What Child is This? and Mary, Did You Know? Roy Saunders sang I'm In a Hurry and I Don't Know Why, I'll Be Home for Christmas and I Want to Wish You a Merry Christmas.
Joan and Glenn Julseth sang Silver Bells, I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas and Pretty Paper, Pretty Ribbon of Blue. Gerald Wiebe of Radisson entertained with his version of What Child is This?, a song he wrote called It Feels Like Christmas to Me and closed with a medley of Christmas songs.
Borden Lions choir sang Oh My Lord, Winter in Borden on a lovely Christmas morning and Oh We're Heading on Home. The program closed with Bob Wardhaugh playing keyboard for ten old, well known Christmas carols, ending with We Wish You a Merry Christmas.
Upcoming events: Borden Care Home Auxiliary tea and program is Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. Borden farmers market Christmas sale is Dec. 7 from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. in the Borden Community Centre/seniors' room. The Grade 12 class will sell lunch. There will be cash draws. There is no admission fee and a donation will be given to the Borden Firefighters from the farmers market.
Santa will be stopping in Borden Dec. 7 at the co-op hardware store from 2 - 4 p.m. with goodies and draws. The school Christmas concert is Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. in the community centre. Grad 2014 have a pancake breakfast Dec. 20 from 7 - 9 a.m., then students and teachers are off until Jan. 6.
In Radisson the Lutheran Church carol night is Dec. 8 at 7 pm. The Fielding Wildlife Federation will have their annual horn measuring, annual meeting and smoker Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. in the Radisson Hall.
Santa arrives on Main St. in Radisson at 2 p.m., Dec. 14. The Royal Purple will have a tea, bake sale and raffle from 2 - 4 p.m., with other vendors having tables. In the evening at 7 p.m. the playground will have a Christmas bingo.
