Blast from the Past: Dale Fittes sinks fourth career hole-in-one

Six men from the area graduated with private pilot licences, while one woman received a Landit award.

50 years ago

The Wilkie Brewers, representing northwest Saskatchewan, were the 1975 provincial senior baseball champions, going undefeated through the four-team tournament. Ed Holzman won several awards – MVP, best second baseman, $5 for a homerun and was also in a three-way tie for the most hits.

Major Maynard Slater, CO of Canadian Forces Station Beaverlodge enrolled his son John as an officer cadet in the Canadian Armed Forces. John was headed to Royal Roads Military College to study chemical engineering.

Graduating with their private pilot licences were Dale Phillips, Ralph Thompson and Marcel Bulcke of Unity, Ellsworth Woodward of Cut Knife, Boyd Partington of Evesham and Barry Houser of Rutland. Sheila Houser received a Landit award, which allowed her to take off or land the airplane if necessary.

The Unity Senior Lodge Project was officially approved for funding of $960,000 from the Centenary Affordable Housing Program, which together with the $1.6 million raised meant construction could soon begin on the $3.5 million project.

Wendy and Jacklin Andrews of Wilkie announced a short film, Unwritten, written and directed by their son Kaare, was selected to premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. Kaare was also recognized earlier in the year at the Shuster Comic Awards as Canada’s best comic book artist in Canada for 2024.
