The Borden Community Centre Preservation Committee held their second annual Borden's Got Talent event April 15 in the centre, with nine performances. Each act did two sets and first up was the quartet of Ty Sargent, George Hembery, Michael Crabb and Aryn Polichuk, playing on garbage cans with drumsticks. Second up was Chloe Redhead and Sadie Funk who did a dance routine with props. Next up was Rose Mandziak who sang City Lights and Someday You Will Want Me, followed by Clayton Wiebe playing piano solos. Then the rock band 26 Pledge, with Avery Fairbrother on guitar and soloist, Dylan Sargent on drums and George Hembery on bass guitar and backup singing performed songs they had composed. JaeLynn Rempel sang I'll Always Love You and Independence Day. Aryn Polichuk had two piano solos, followed by Lyndon and Tarrell Block doing musical comedy - To All the Beautiful Women (in the room) and then humorous words about days of the week looking ahead to a fun weekend. The last performance was by the rock and roll band Jam, with Matt Fairbrother singing, Avery Fairbrother and Jamie Branderick on guitars and as backup singers. For their second set they had Dylan Sargent on drums and George Hembery with guitar joined in for Sweet Home Alabama.
Thank you, by MC Dianne Sylvester, was extended to Matt Fairbrother for the use of his sound system, including setting it up and looking after the music, to Tom Wensley for his computer talents in tracking the pledges, to Langham Subway (Don and Jeanette Block) for the cookies and a big thanks to everyone who attended and pledged, raising over $4,706 for community centre renovations.
All contestants fourth through ninth place received 5 per cent of their pledges. Third and getting 10 per cent ($64) was the Trash Can band - Ty, Michael, George and Aryn. In second place and getting 15 per cent ($126) were Tarrell and Lyndon Block and in first place, getting 20 per cent ($243) was JaeLynn Rempel.
On the hard working BCCPC are Dianne Sylvester, Florence Neufeld (and Ed), Dianne Rawlyk (and Ed), Gloria Derbowka, Jeanette Block, Joyce Orchard and Jackie Meister. They are always trying to raise funds for hall renovations.
The Radisson Royal Purple held their monthly meeting April 2 with seven members present. Pins for the 100th anniversary of Royal Purple in Canada, which happens in 2014, were bought by the ladies. Plans were finalized for the District 9 annual meeting, and the nominating committee is to finalize their officers for the ensuing year. The raffle was won by the Lodge and the next meeting is May 7 with the election and installation of officers.
Radisson Lodge hosted the district annual meeting in the Radisson Seniors' Room April 14, with 25 ladies present from Allan, Asquith, Saskatoon and Radisson lodges. The meeting was chaired by past HRL Lorraine Olinyk. The ladies enjoyed a lunch of open-faced buns, veggie tray, cheese and pickles, along with a sundae bar for dessert.
During the meeting, the Saskatoon drill team led in the marches, Irene Turner from Saskatoon was pianist and the Saskatoon ladies performed the Draping of the Charter in memory of four departed sisters of Saskatoon Lodge 46. Friendship Night, when the lodges meet for supper and entertainment, will be June 13 at Asquith. Each lodge provides items for the program. Ten door prizes donated by the Radisson ladies were handed out to visiting ladies and the raffle prizes were won by Diane Malakoe and Terri Lorman, both of Saskatoon. Before leaving for home the ladies all enjoyed coffee and dainties.
The Borden Co-op grocery will be open 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. Mondays to Fridays and 9 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Saturdays, starting April 16. The Co-op supper (advance tickets at $6) and annual meeting is April 19 at 6 p.m. in the Borden Community Centre.
The Affinity Credit Union supper (advance tickets only) and information meeting is April 24 in Dalmeny Community Hall at 6 p.m. There will be door prizes and the Prairie Spirit Jazz Band will perform.
Borden Farmers' Market held their annual meeting April 10 in the Borden Seniors' Room with nine members present. Reports were heard from president Lorraine Olinyk on the 2011 successful year, and from treasurer Connie Kenakin. The opening date for the summer markets was set for May 4 in the Borden Fire Hall continuing every Friday until Thanksgiving, with hours from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.(some vendors may stay until 6 p.m. if warranted).
Election of directors was held with president Lorraine Olinyk, vice-president Helen Sutherland, treasurer Connie Kenakin, member Rita Shukin and the secretary and joining the board will be Karen Kerr, replacing Mandy Tracksell who wanted to retire. The membership fee remains at $5, but the annual dues and weekly stall rental were raised to $4.
One new vendor was approved and most of the ones from last year will be returning -Shukins, Kenakins, Karen Kerr, Helen Sutherland, Lillian Hamilton, Gayle and Jesse Wensley, Lorraine Olinyk, Eileen Petrun, Marlene Matthews and Natalie Gramiak. We will miss Sandi Bader who has opened up her New & Olde Shoppe down the street from the fire hall. Condolences were also sent to Elaine Parsons on the passing of her husband Weldon Parsons of Blaine Lake. They were members of our market.
The Borden Dance Club, with dancers from Borden, Langham and Radisson, were in competitions at Aberdeen this past weekend. Their own recital in the Borden Community Centre will be April 21 at 7:30 p.m. and April 22 at 2 p.m., with lunch to follow both performances. The following weekend the dancers are off to Biggar to competitions.
Borden School news: after the Easter break the students will be into badminton playoffs with the juniors slated to play the first round April 17 at Leask, the second round April 19 in Warman and finals at Rosthern April 21. The seniors start playoffs at VCA in Osler April 24, then April 26 and finals April 28. Then all the athletes will be into track and field. There is a clinic at Borden April 26 and May 8 and, if they wish to compete at the conference meet May 16 and17, they have to attend these clinics.
Congrats to the band members who placed first at Dalmeny Music Festival and to the senior and jazz bands that performed well at the International Band Festival in Edmonton. The Prairie Spirit (West) Jazz band had gigs at The Bassment March 30, will be playing at the Affinity Credit Union supper and information meeting in Dalmeny April 24 and then at a superannuated teachers' event June 13. The final concert of the year for the bands will be June 6 at 7 p.m. at Walter W. Brown School in Langham. Borden students in the bands are Sarah S. in junior and Michael Crabb, George Hembery, Tyrell Sargent and Aryn Polichuk in senior and jazz.
High school students are planning a 30-hour famine for May 4 and 5.
The Borden School Community Council will hold their annual meeting April 23 at 7 p.m. in the school science lab. Parents are encouraged to attend and to fill positions on the council.
The Borden Friendship Club held their monthly business and annual meeting April 11. Elected for the ensuing year is president Eileen Petrun, vice-president Lottie Petriew, secretary Lorraine Olinyk and treasurer Florence Neufeld. The annual fee to belong remains at $10 and the committees remained the same except that Audrey Baker took over from Elizabeth Derksen as convenor of the lunch committee. The club set June 12 at 2:30 p.m. as the date to invite neighbouring seniors' clubs. The entertainment at the April 25 potluck supper will be the Julseth Family of Borden. The club donated $80 to the Beautiful Borden committee to put soil and flowers in four barrels around town, and also sent $300 to SOS Villages to sponsor a village in Mombasa, South Africa.
A bridal shower for Danielle Wiebe, who is marrying Gordon Neufeld of Borden, will be held April 23 at 7 p.m. in the Borden Seniors' Room and a card is at the Co-op grocery for those wishing to sign.
