Do you think it's possibly spring? Being that we never really experienced much of a winter I am reluctant to think this nice weather is spring, however I am certainly enjoying it while it lasts. Although the third intense weather warning this week has me thinking Mother Nature is not ready to give up on the winter theme just yet.
March 16 weekend the team of Lloyd Fell, Keith Schell, Curtis Bowker and Martin Boser competed in the dominion club provincial championships in Estevan. From round robin play this team ended with a 5-1 record, losing only to Steve Slupski. This moved them to the championship round Sunday. However they could not overcome the strong Brian Humble team, and this loss cost them the chance advance.
Everyone was cheering on Team Darlene Gillies, including Wanda Heitt. The gals were in Abbotsford, B.C. to take part in the National Senior Women's Curling Championship after they won the provincial title in February. They won their opening draw with Wanda scoring the highest percentage for a second in that round of draws, curling at 91 per cent. They have a marathon week ahead playing all of the provinces before this weekend's playoffs. The team hopes to be in that playoff weekend.
This past weekend the curling club held their annual ladies' bonspiel. Although entries were down this year, with only 11 teams participating, the Mardi Gras theme was certain to indicate these gals always know how to have fun. A event winners were Corinne Van de Meutter with Michelle Van de Meutter as third, Rhonda Kohlman as lead and Gail Forbes as second; The youngest team competing, Kyla Van de Meutter, accompanied by Megan Babchuk, Heather Wood and Cyanne Sperle won a 9-7 victory over in the B event over the Colleen Voinorosky team. The C event winners were Sheila Heitt, Donna Bonogofski, Kristy Heitt and Tracey Honeker. This weekend the curling club will hold their year end funspiel.
The Midget AAs played at home in game one of League final against Prince Albert Tuesday. The Bantams faced off in their league finals against Dinsmore this week but results were not available yet at press time. The midgets were not able to defeat Elrose in a very close series for their league championships. The Luseland/Dodsland Midgets that also had some Unity boys on it, played their league finals this week as well. So this weekend, the rink wraps up with its annual Canucks recreational hockey tournament and it's all over for another season..
UCHS senior boys' basketball team, having earned gold in conference playoffs, challenged themselves and other teams in regional playdowns this past weekend. Game notes showed Keenan Lang and Zane Maze being the top scorers in their games, however, they were unable to capture a spot to move them on to the provincial level. Badminton is now underway at UCHS.
UCHS drama is in the rehearsals leading up to the regional drama festival. The club will present their production April 17 and 18 and then jump to festival April 20 and 21.
The 30th annual Ducks Unlimited Banquet that took place at the community centre on March 17 was another resounding success. The group does well with a number of items on the auction table that are appealing to participants.
A most unique event was held in Unity on March 17. The first Princess Tea was held at St. Peter's Hall for gals from age zero to 99. Guests were asked to dress up in princess apparel and enjoy tea and dainties, as well as games, entertainment and prizes. Flowing, pretty princess dresses were abundant as were the giant smiles of those who attended.
The Unity Music Festival will take place from March 26 to March 29, with the final performance showcase taking place Sunday, April 1 at 2 p.m. at the UCHS gym. Vocal performances will be Monday and Tuesday at Unity United Church, senior and junior Piano will take place Tuesday to Friday at the Unity Baptist Church and the school portion of the Music Festival will take place on Tuesday, March 27 at Unity Public School.
The Unity School of Dance showcase of solo and duet numbers is 2:30 and 7 p.m. March 31 at UCHS senior gym. The club will be accepting a silver donation.
The Annual Easter Egg Hunt organized and hosted by Delta Co-op is on March 31 at the community centre starting at 11 a.m.. For kids up to age 10 there is plenty to watch and do as kids in different age categories get to dash for eggs and enjoy opening them to see if they won chocolate or a prize. A hot dog barbecue is put on by Sifto is offered The Easter Bunny and Cooper are making their rounds for high fives and photos.
Churches have been hosting a series of lenten lunches at a different location each Wednesday during the season of Lent. These lunches offer participants a meal and chance to share worship and thoughts leading up to Easter. The ministerial association is also planning their annual Way of the Cross walk on Good Friday, where worshippers of all denominations are asked to walk bearing the cross at various stations around town to help recognize the way Jesus walked in the time leading to his crucifixion. The event is always wrapped up with hot drinks and hot cross buns for participants. Golf carts and cars are made available for those who are either unable to walk along, or can only walk part of the route.
Coffee row folk have been discussing Team Canada's standings in the World Women's Curling Championships, as well as pondering how the men will do in their curling aspirations as Team Canada overseas. There are also hints of conversation in regards to the upcoming growing season with speculation on additional moisture before seeding will get under way. And you can never take the Riders off the table as you can always hear a word or two on the 2011 season and what fans can expect this year.
