Crown Hill 4-H members show and sell animals in Saskatoon

In team grooming, the junior team of Rachel Sutherland and Kolten and Justin Yaseniuk placed fifth, and the intermediate team of Anna Verbonac, Tyler Yaseniuk and Austin Ouellette placed fourth. In the junior judging competition, Rachel Sutherland placed first in dairy and in quilt (mystery) judging and overall placed seventh. In the stockman's presentation, which is open to all ages and where they have to do speaking, Rachel placed 17th out of 56 and Kira Casavant placed ninth, enabling her to go on to provincials in August. Kolten Yaseniuk and Cole Reid placed in the top ten in judging.

In the yearling heifer classes Sunday, Kira and Clay Casavant placed fourth and fifth in Charolais. In other breeds Anna Verbonac placed second and Rachel Sutherland fourth; in commercial heifer Kolten, Tyler and Justin Yaseniuk placed fourth, fifth and sixth. Crown Hill had no entries in two-year-old cow with calf or three-year-old cow with calf. In the two-year-old commercial cow and calf, Darby and Shayla Chappell of Langham placed first and second.

Weight division classes and sale of their animals followed July 9.

In lightweight division 1, Eric Zerebeski was eighth with 1,071 pounds sold at $1.75 a pound while Taran Zerebeski was ninth at 1,043 pounds sold at $1.55 per pound. In lightweight 2, Ben Verbonac's took first place with a 1,147 pound animal, which sold at $2.85 a pound. Abigail Roth was seventh at 1,128 lbs selling at $1.50 a pound and Austin Ouellette was ninth with 1,126 lbs sold for $2.90 a pound. In lightweight 3, Cody Shumanski was first with 1,175 lbs, which sold for $2.30 a pound and Rachel Sutherland was third with 1,174 lbs which sold for $2.50 a pound.

In medium weight division 1, Anna Verbonac placed fourth with a 1,228 pound animal selling for $3 a pound. In medium weight 2, Cole Reid was sixth at 1,235 pounds which sold for $2.10 a pound. In medium weight, Tyler Yasieniuk was eighth with 1,264 pounds selling at $1.75 a pound and Justin Yasieniuk was seventh at 1,277 pounds selling at $1.60 a pound. In medium weight 4, Clay Casavant was 10th with 1,301 pounds selling at $2.60 per pound and Kolten Yasieniuk was eighth with 1,328 selling at $1.50 a pound.

Kira Casavant was the only Crown Hill member with an animal in the heavy weight classes and, in division 4, she was sixth with a 1,467 animal which sold for $2.60 a pound.

Rachel is from Borden, the Yasieniuks, Roths, Cole Reid and Shumanskis are all from Hafford, Casavants from Blaine Lake, Verbonacs and Austin are from Marcelin and Zerebeskis are from Rosthern.

Children ages 5 - 12 can be entertained at two programs during July and August, with the Borden library summer activity program running from July 12 to Aug. 15, Wednesdays except for July 12, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $2 a week or $10 for six weeks per child. Kandice Walker along with teen helpers will have crafts, fun games, contests, etc. The program ends up Aug. 15 with a free puppet show at 2 p.m. with the Lakeland Summer players. The library will hold a wiener roast and bingo fundraiser at the sports grounds in the evening Aug. 15.

The Borden parks and rec board along with Rivers West District have the mobile playground coming to Borden three days: July 17 with a fantasy kingdom theme; Aug. 7 with a science fair theme (register by July 27); and Aug. 14 with an on the farm theme (register by Aug. 3). There is a minimum number of 10 for the program to go ahead. There is no charge for kids aged 5-11, but children should bring a bag lunch.
