Exploring the depths of water

Water, a critically important subject for everyone, is not only an important life force; it conjures up notions of fluidity, flow, movement, power and peace.

Water, a critically important subject for everyone, is not only an important life force; it conjures up notions of fluidity, flow, movement, power and peace.

Water is full of contradictions and yet it is consistent and open to endless interpretations.

Waterworks, the title of this year's exhibition of fibre and textile artwork created by members of the Fibre Art Network (FAN), brings great ambiance to the Chapel Gallery. Through these artists' eyes the subject is surveyed and transformed into two- and three-dimensional tactile forms of varying sizes and styles.

The proximity of the Chapel Gallery to the North Saskatchewan River and the stunning view of the river valley from its patio make it the perfect venue for this work, which was created specifically with this space in mind.

FAN is a co-operative of self-defined artists based in western Canada, committed to promoting quilting and fibre arts and each other. Members are from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, the Yukon and Northwest Territories.

FAN membership includes emerging fibre artists, teachers, authors, judges and award winning quilt artists. Many have shown their work nationally and internationally and some have won both national and international recognition for their work.

"The co-operative engenders fellowship of like-minded friends and celebrates differences as well as common interests," says exhibit curator Holly Hildebrand.

Waterworks is curated by Hildebrand and Kathy Dill from works by the Western Canada Group. The show runs from Aug. 1 through Sept. 30.

The Chapel Gallery is located in the Don Ross Centre at 891 - 99th St. and is open daily from noon to 5 p.m. For more information please contact the Chapel Gallery at 445-1757.
