The Neilburg School Community Council recently held their annual general meeting. This meeting included the election of the new executive for the year. Elected by acclamation were Karen Putnam as chairperson, Carla Schmidt as secretary and Jeff Walso as treasurer and teacher representative. Bev Nattress is the Marsden representative and Mariah Nattress is the student representative. Dianna Worman also sits on the council as the principal of the school. Resigning from the SCC are Fay Hewko and Sharon Sawtell. The current executive would like to thank them for their many years of hard work and dedication to the council. As a result of these resignations, there are several openings on the executive. Anyone interested in becoming more involved in the school and their children's education would be welcome on the SCC.

Ms. Waldorf reports that many students are donating their time, during "plustime" to help feed the world's hungry. If any parents would like to join the cause, they can go to the website, www.freerice.com to register and join the Neilburg Composite School group to help increase the total. Freerice is the world's only online game feeding the hungry worldwide. For every correct answer to a trivia question, 10 grains of rice are donated to the World Food Program to feed the hungry. WFP is the world's largest humanitarian agency, feeding on average 100 million people every year. Freerice has raised enough to feed almost 5 million hungry people since launching in 2007.

Did you know that washing your hands is the most effective way to prevent the spread of viruses and bacteria? With the flu season coming upon us, everyone needs to be vigilant about washing their hands before and after handling food, after using the toilet or changing a diaper, and after sneezing or coughing into your hand. The public health nurse recommends your hands be washed for 15 seconds using warm water and soap; then towel dry and turn the tap off using the paper towel. Hand sanitizers work well if there is no visible dirt on the hands. If people are sick, they should stay home until they are well, to prevent the spread of infection to others. Influenza immunization is available at no cost for everyone. Children aged six months to five years, all pregnant women, all people aged 65 and older, and people who are medically at risk are especially encouraged to receive the flu vaccine.

The NCS Christmas concert, performed by the kindergarten to Grade 6 students, will be a play titled A Christmas Peter Pan. The concert will be held Dec. 14. Before you put your Halloween costumes away, please let the school know if you have any costumes that could be used for this event. They need costumes for fairies, elves, pirates and a Big Foot. Other needed items are a garbage truck toy, a Pterodactyl toy, a Big Foot Monster robot toy, swords, butterfly nets, kazoos and slide whistles. If you have any of these items, please send them to the school, with your name on them so they can be returned to you.

Nicole Foster will be offering photography lessons at the Neilburg school and at the Marsden library throughout November and December. Nicole has been interested in photography for the last six years. After spending most of high school locked up in the dark room, she went on to take a graphic design course in college. Following this, she worked as a photography lab technician for two years, printing and editing photographs for customers. The next two years she spent selling cameras as a very successful commissioned sales associate. During this time, she also organized and taught photography lessons. This past year, Nicole taught English to children in Japan. Several lessons will be available, covering all ages and levels. There will be lessons for those under 13 years of age, a beginner course, intermediate course and an advanced course. Each level will consist of both indoor and outdoor lessons.
