Any plans that were had for Grey Cup activities sure didn't hinder the attendance to the fourth annual toy bingo in Wilkie.
The event put on by Prairie Branches (formerly WILS) was run by staff and volunteers and was, in fact, a big success. Around 300 people, close to last years' numbers, ventured out to partake in the fundraiser for the Wilkie Day Program. The event, held in the St. James Church basement Nov. 24 from 2 to 4 p.m. held not only a toy bingo but a bake sale and raffle as well.
Mary Nestmann, a Wilkie Day Program worker says that the fundraiser "exceeded the amount [raised] from last year." The money raised will benefit the program with small purchases such as a Wii games, movies and seasonal decorations, but says Nestmann, "no final decision has been made on a larger item, due to the unexpected amount of funds made for our day program."
The Wilkie Day Program not only serves the local community, but Unity clients attend it as well.
"I would like to thank all the businesses [including home based] in Wilkie and Unity who donated bingo prizes and prizes for our raffle; it is very much appreciated. [I] would like to thank all staff and individuals who donated prizes and baking to our bake table", says Nestmann. And of course, "Thank you to everyone who came out and joined us!"
Prairie Branches is planning to have another toy bingo next year in which Nestmann says, "See you there!"
