Kindergarten student fundraising for kids in hospital

The school was full of white and green Nov. 22 as the SLC sponsored Rider Pride Day. There were T-shirts, jerseys, hats, socks, scarves and even pom-poms. A green Rider Nation flag was hanging in the foyer and we sent our best wishes to our team.

Nate Starycki, one of our kindergarten students, has selflessly expressed the pay it forward idea this Christmas. He has had to spend a lot of time in a hospital and knows what it feels like to be in the hospital during holidays. He decided to collect money and gifts to give to children who have to stay in the hospital this Christmas. The money went to purchase toys, iTunes gift cards for older children and even parking passes for the families who visit all the time. At last count, Nate had collected over $3,000. We are all very proud of Nate and his concern for others this Christmas.

A special thank you to Damen and Haylee deStrake. They both donated money to the fundraising committee to put towards our new school sign. They are former students of the school and their donations are greatly appreciated.

The school collected monetary and gift donations to fill boxes for the Operation Christmas Child boxes. There were a total of 24 boxes filled to send to boys and girls from a South American or Central American country. It is nice to know we helped put smiles on children's faces this Christmas. Donations were collected for the shipping of these boxes and the staff covered the rest. Thanks to everyone who donated towards the boxes.

A successful book fair was held during the week of Nov. 18 to 22. The school made about $ 800 for new library books. Jeremy Haidenger, a Grade 7 student, won the door prize of $25 in free books, and his classroom teacher, Roxanne Jordan, also got to choose $25 worth of books for the Grade 7 and 8 classroom.

The SLC held a raffle for a $20 gift card. They sold tickets for a week, at noon hour. The winner of the gift card was Jean Brehon.

Elementary house leagues have finished flags and are now playing mini-basketball.

Mrs. Jackson organizes a craft club Wednesdays and Thursdays at noon hour. They recently made some origami frogs.

Our best wishes to Mrs. Krista Nickel who will not be returning to teach this year. She is home awaiting the arrival of her second child.

Mrs. Cardin and the Grade 9 class have been making lunch for anyone who is interested. They made a plate of healthy snacks, another day it was a delicious salad bar and on Monday it was soup. This is being done in the Grade 9 practical and applied arts class.

Don't forget the annual Christmas Concert will be Dec. 17.
