A week that has already seen a huge variety of live music will conclude May 4 with a choral performance from the University of Alberta Mixed Chorus.
The UAMC is on its 68th annual Spring Tour and is organizing this year's tour as a tribute to the late conductor Richard S. Eaton, who lived from 1914 to 1968. Eaton directed the choir from 1947 to 1967, making this tour the 45th anniversary of Eaton's final tour and the 65th since he became the director. Under Eaton's leadership, the UAMC toured extensively, especially to small Alberta communities.
Eaton's also had a great influence on the music performed by the choir. Every concert performed since he left the choir in 1967 has included music that he introduced to the UAMC repertoire.
Accordingly, the concert will feature a variety of music representative of Eaton's taste in choral music.
With motets from Pelstrina and Schütz, Ralph Vaughan Williams's "Three French-Canadian Folk Songs," as well as Schubert's Marche Militaire, Lery Anderson's Bugler's Holiday, the theme from Pirates of the Caribbean and the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah, the concert is sure to have music for all musical interests.
The choir will be accompanied by the U of A Faculty of Education Handbell Ringers, who have performed the UAMC since the group was founded in 1988
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Territorial Drive Alliance Church, and tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for seniors.
