Rec. board keeps village hopping

The Speers Recreation Board has been busy so far in 2012. The board offered a winter and a spring fitness class that was enjoyed by all who attended. Thanks to Susan Rice for teaching the classes. Look for another class to begin in the fall.

An annual general meeting was held March 8 and members were pleased by the turnout. There was discussion of upcoming events and facility upgrades. The board remains with Blair Jackson as chairman, Todd Nicholson as vice-chairman and Glynis Oliver as secretary-teasurer.

An early Easter party was hosted for the children in the community March 16. About 25 kids attended and they were kept busy with pin the tail on the bunny, rabbit ear ring toss, bunny hop sack races, and rabbit rubber band shooting. They also decorated cupcakes, enjoyed a chocolate fondue and did a butterfly craft. Everyone received an Easter treat at the end of the party.

A jam session is hosted on the second Friday of each month. The next one is April 13, 2 to 7 p.m. with supper served at 5 p.m. The board would like to thank the musicians who come and entertain us and invite others to join in.

Once again the board partnered with the Speers United Church to produce the annual dinner theatre March 29 to April 1. There were three sold out dinner theatre performances of The Pie Ladies. A Thursday evening dessert theatre performance was added as there was a strong demand for tickets.

Throughout the weekend the organizers sold raffle tickets on some donated items. Winners were Mary Baycroft, Mary Toews, Barry Dennis, Linda Beland and Alina Balzer. At each performance a pie was awarded as a door prize.

The board and United Church members appreciate the support of businesses who donated prizes or otherwise contributed to the venture.

This event could not be hosted without the volunteers, including the cast and crew of the play and the bar, kitchen and serving staff for the meal.

Upcoming events include a Perogie Supper and Social April 21st. This will be by advanced tickets only so contact Glynis at 246-2005 to reserve.

The board is also hosting an art show April 28 from 2 to 5 p.m. Please contact Ruth at 246-4672 if you would like to display your work.
