Service features special songs and puppet show

Borden United Church held a children's service Nov. 6. Gayle Wensley played guitar for the action songs. One of the action songs was God is Good in four languages. There was a puppet show about being friends, with Billy the dog and Silly the pig, which was very enjoyable and told about being a good listener, being best friends and talking to God. It gave everyone a laugh. Prayer slips were filled in to put on the offering plate along with prayers for the soldiers and families, and for children that they may never know war.

The church held a soup or chili luncheon Nov. 8 in the Seniors' Room with good attendance. The grocery hampers went to Helen Sutherland, Claudia Dyck and Stan Foster.

Borden Friendship Club held their monthly business meeting Nov. 9 where information was read from the SOS Village in Mombasa, Kenya, that the club supports. A thank you from the community centre committee to the seniors looking after the selling of lunch at the Oct. 22 garage sale was also read.

A motion was made to look into the possibility of having a New Year's Eve function with the community centre preservation committee with proceeds to go towards shingling the roof of the centre. The Seniors Christmas supper is Thursday, Dec. 8 with a catered supper and program in the Seniors' Room. The business meeting will be Dec. 14 and the potluck supper and birthdays will be Dec. 28.

Rev. Debbie Ramage began her services at the Anglican churches in Borden, Rosthern and Maymont Nov. 6 and has been in the community visiting and getting to know people. At present she is living in Saskatoon and driving out for her services.

Remembrance Day services were well attended in Borden and Radisson , with the Borden Lions hosting the Borden service. Gayle Wensley officiated and there were close to 90 for the service and lunch.

In Radisson the Royal Purple hosted the event with over 130 out for the service and lunch. Five RCMP attended the service in their red serge and there were three veterans - Stan Bandur, Ken Dillon and Richard Bailey. Pastor Bornhuse of the Lutheran Church led the service, Ken Dillon read the honour roll. Wreaths were placed by the RCMP, Mayor Kyliuk for the town, Stan Bandur for the veterans, Audrey Baker for mothers, Kay Shipowich for the OORP and Kaitlyn Buckham for the school.

Showing in the purebred Shorthorn class at the Saskatoon Fall Fair were Rachel Sutherland who placed second and won Reserve Champion with her cow-calf pair; Duncan Sutherland, fourth with his yearling female; and Glenn Sutherland, fourth with his heifer calf. In the Junior Classic Nov. 11, Rachel was third in the British breed heifer calf, winning $35 in prize money and Duncan was second in the yearling British breed heifer, winning $45.

In British breeds, Katie Serhienko of Maymont was first with her heifer calf, receiving $50 and, in exotic breeds heifer calf, Cassidy Serhienko was third, getting $35. The Grand Champion female was shown by Emily Froehlich of Perdue and the Reserve Grand Champion female was shown by Katie Serhienko of Maymont.

In the commercial cattle show, Gary and Shari Nickel from Borden had five pens with five feeder steers in each and were first, second and fourth in one class and second and third in the second class, as well as claiming Reserve Champion pen of five steers. They averaged $1,000 on each of their calves. Nickels also had a pen of three replacement heifers placing fourth, which were not sold.

Barry and Renita Saunders (North Creek Simmentals) had one pen of three replacement heifers which were first in their class and the Grand Champion pen. They had two pens of bulls, placing third and fourth. Glenn and Sheri Sutherland (Clythe Mane Shorthorns) had two pens of bred heifers, placing first in one class and fourth in the other. They sold for $1,400 each.

The entries in the purebred show were down from 2010, but the commercial entries were up with a few new breeders bringing in animals.

Two fall suppers were held over the weekend with Radisson rec board serving a roast beef supper to a full hall Nov. 12 and the Borden Lions serving over 160 at their roast turkey supper in the Borden Community Centre Nov. 13.

Borden senior boys' volleyball team, coached by Dean Broughton,won the conference playoffs in Perdue Nov. 12 and advance to regional play downs in Medstead Nov. 19.
