Shuffleboard cancelled, but canasta players prevail

First off a couple of glitches from last week. Tickets are needed for the play in Glaslyn Thursday, Dec. 5, and they are selling fast. The bridge is contract bridge, not 'contact' and Pat's name is 'Ribey' not Riley. Sorry.

Tuesday morning we woke to see beautiful hoar frost on everything, especially the spruce trees. It looked a lot like my front yard did at Chitek Lake.

Duplicate bridge was played at the Do Drop In Nov. 19 with the top scores going to Eric Callbeck and Gerry Fernandes and second to Jetta and Terence Dasilva. A nice time was enjoyed by all present.

Bev McCrimmon of North Battleford has had her knee surgery. She is coming along well and looking forward to life without all the pain. We wish her a speedy recovery and missed her at canasta.

Canasta was played at the Do Drop In Nov. 22 with the top score at the table of four being Linda Ard and Vernon Iverson, and top scores at the table of six were John Soloninko and Lorna Pearson. Tickets for the Dec. 1 concert are sold out, now we just wait for the evening of entertainment.

The Boy Scouts delivered the popcorn items ordered last month, and the products are being enjoyed. The white chocolate covered pretzels that I ordered are scrumptious.

My grandson, Greg Lambert from Fort McMurray, Alta., is taking his winter holiday this week by going to Lake Louise where the World Cup Men's Downhill and Super G Skiing competition is going to be held on Nov. 30 and Dec 1. He is one of the many volunteers who work to keep the runs in top shape for the competitors. He is supplied with accommodation while there. The ladies' World Cup downhill races are scheduled for Dec. 6 and 7 followed by the Super G Dec. 8. There is a record number of teams coming to take part, leading up to the Sochi Winter Olympics. There will be more than 100 male racers and 60 female racers.

The ham and turkey bingo held in the community hall Friday evening was a huge success, with a bigger turnout than ever! It was sponsored by the hall committee who appreciate the support. Many went home with a turkey or ham and the hampers were drawn for, too.

This same hall committee is sponsoring Santa Claus Day on Saturday, Dec. 14, in the community hall. They begin with a noon luncheon followed by entertainment. This includes the Meota Lions Chorus, and from Saskatoon there will be Paul Runalls and the Prairie Sailor Band. The afternoon ends with the arrival of Santa Claus.

The sons of Norway are hosting their Christmas supper Dec. 8 at the Do Drop In, with games starting around 2 p.m. and followed by a supper of Norwegian dishes. This is always an interesting event with a change of menu, as well.

It is nice to see some folks have their Christmas lights up already, it does brighten up the community and give it a warm glow. The village lights have also been put up.

Hope you all enjoyed the football game on Sunday, and since it went in Saskatchewan's favour there were lots of happy people.

The Sweet Adelines from North Battleford and surrounding areas are holding their Christmas Show in the Dekker Centre Dec. 8 at 2 p.m. Doors open at noon. There will be trade show tables in the lobby with an assortment of crafts, baking and gifts, as well as a silent auction. They will be joined by two guests, Lana Quinn, who plays the harp, and Tristan Durocher, who plays violin. There are three ladies from Meota who sing with this group - Linda MacDonald, Gail Meiers and Irene Bell.

New residents in the village are Katie and Randy Struck from Meadow Lake. Katie is a granddaughter of Elaine and Warren Iverson, and we welcome them and hope they enjoy their life in Meota.

Elaine Poole posted on Facebook pictures of the Grey Cup parade that the Saskatchewan fans assembled in their Araby trailer park wearing their green gear.,walking, riding in decorated golf carts, quads, cars and so on. No doubt they all had a ball in Yuma, Ariz. on Sunday. What a special treat to have the Roughriders come out winners, to prove to all that they really are a great team!
