UCW members host World Day of Prayer

This year the World Day of Prayer was held in the Speers and district United Church hosted by the Richard UCW consisting of Ellen Wood, Alice Potter, Charlotte and Ida Gillatt, Hattie Wawryk, Lorna MacDonald and Rev. Nora Borgeson.

Nora Borgeson. The World Day of Prayer Ecummencial Service was written this year by the Women of Malaysia on the theme of"Let Justice Prevail."

Malaysia's name derives from its former name Malaya. Malaysia is comprised of 70 per cent rainforest and lies north of the equator in South East Asia consisting of West Malaysia and East Malaysia. Separated by the South China Sea, Malaysia is a land of rice paddies, palm oil and rubber estates with the people living in high rise condos, sea shores and riverbanks.

Malaysia's government is described as a constitutional monarchy under pang-di-pertuan agung or king as overall ruler and supreme commander of the armed rforces with the ruler of each state being either the sultan, the raja, the yangdi pertuan negeri or the state governor. Malaysia is made up of friendly and warm hearted people and is a nation of Malaysian, Chinese, Indians and indigenious people of Satah and Sarawak. Their multifaceted culture consists of festivals, dances, arts & crafts, music, games, exotic cuisine, their costumes and lifestyles.

The Malaysia greeting to each other is a slight bow, palms together and selament dalang, meaning peace and welcome.

Ellen Wood was the leader for the World Day of Prayer in Speers with Bible readings. hymns sung, prayers for state of the nation for those who brought in their Christian faithand for church leaders who brought churches to rural areas.

Ellen Wood, Charlotte and Ida Gillatt performed a skit about the parable of the widow and the judge.

There was a good turnout for the service and lunch was served after the service.
