Village shines with Christmas light displays

Well I think Rabbit Lake is in the spirit of the season. There are a number of incredible light displays both in the village and in the surrounding area.

Well I think Rabbit Lake is in the spirit of the season. There are a number of incredible light displays both in the village and in the surrounding area. Sunday evening Shelly and I took a drive to see what creativity surrounds us and we were both impressed.

Actually we had been driving home from the Rosthern Junior College Christmas concert at which Tyler Martens accompanied the full concert choir on the piano. Patrick and Gwendolyn Laughlin performed in the concert choir and the choral, with Gwen also singing in the women's choir. It was great to see local students performing so well.

As we drove home we observed the lights in the various communities and along the way and I would have to say that the lights of Rabbit Lake and area are by far the best! Now I am trying not to let my bias show.

The tenants of the Rabbit Lake Housing units along with the board and staff gathered at the Senior Sunrise Circle for a full turkey supper Dec 15. What a good supper it was!

It is great to see vehicles parked at the rink and to hear the sounds of pucks hitting the boards. Even though it is "only" natural ice, it was more than adequate for a couple of young Spiritwood teams to get out there and begin improving their skills. Thanks to the volunteers who got that ice in there.

Speaking of ice, apparently there is enough ice on Meeting Lake to go ice fishing. According to Doug Lamb there is eight inches or more. Reports of jackfish and a few pickerel being pulled through have been floating around.

It is great to see Greg MacKenzie home and without a doubt he will be out there fishing any day now.

Get well greetings go out to James Hansen and Walter Fertuck, residents of Rose Gill Lodge. Also get well wishes go out to Shirley Leigh who has just had a hip replacement. Shirley is doing very well according to reports. We look forward to her being home in the New Year.

The community expresses its condolences to Eva Kobernick, Kevin, Jackie, Mitchell and Leah Kobernick and to Deanna, Elston and Kaelyn Solberg on the passing of their husband and father, Paul Kobernick. Paul was, we think, the resident who had lived in Rabbit Lake the longest, being born here in 1922 and for all but a few years living here consistently. Paul passed away Dec. 15 at age 89 and a half. Paul was well known as an electrician in the area.

And now as we draw closer to Christmas and to the close of 2011, let us be thankful for the warmth of our homes, the food on our tables and the friends that make up our communities. The really important things don't fit under the tree or come from a store. Merry Christmas and all the best in 2012.
