Volunteers continuously work to improve the park and community

In my articles over the last few years I have often mentioned some of the volunteer work that has been done and is being done here in the community. Oftentimes the events I mentioned were in regards to the Meota Recreation Board of which I was a member until just recently.

There are a couple of other groups here who have also been active in trying to improve this community by their efforts, the park board and the Meota Lakeshore Lions. If you look at these two groups, you will find the people who have been active are usually members of both groups. As with any other community it seems that there are those who give above and beyond the call of duty and are always there to give a hand no matter what is going on.

The efforts of the park board, as the name suggests, are aimed at the management and operation of the regional park. Over the years there has been an active group who have put in many hours to expand and improve the park for all who come here.

The Lions group, though, has had a much more diverse effect on the village and area. They were a driving force in getting the golf course constructed and the pool built at the park, and put a good sum of money into the community hall and other works to improve venues here. Over the years they have raised and put over $200,000 into projects in this village.

Oftentimes the Lions are also involved in projects that are more far-reaching than just the local scene. This summer the Meota Lions are hosting the Cavalcade for Diabetes in June. The goal of this project is to raise as much money as they can provincially for diabetes research.

The event will start June 15 with a supper and social for Lions members from across the province. Each club will be sending representatives to bring the proceeds of their efforts for this project. There will be a pancake breakfast June 16 - to which everyone is invited - and registration for the Lions who have come for the event. During the day they are having a number of competitions including ball games, a toilet toss and other imaginative games. There will also be a parade for all to see that day.

It sounds like a lot of fun but the important thing is every club in the province will be part of a common fundraising project, and if they have a little fun in the process that is a good thing. I will give some more details closer to the time.

I think that we here in Meota can be proud of the good work this group does for our community.

In Kaiser play at the Do Drop In May 3, Anna Tucker took first place, Ken Tucker and Fred Gansauge made it a tie for second and third place with Linda Ard taking fourth. Then, May 17, Ken Tucker took first place, Jean Gansauge placed second, Linda Ard came in third and Anna Tucker came fourth.

When the canasta players got together May 11 the winners were Pat Chapman and Cora Christiansen.

In duplicate bridge play May 8, first place went to the team of Eric Callbeck and Gerry Fernandez with Ross Morton and Jim Hamilton taking second. Then, May 15, first place went to Ross Morton and Jim Hamilton with David Sharpe and Frazer Glenn taking second.

In contract bridge action May 14, Joyce Antoine took first place with Robert Iverson coming in second. First honours went to Judy Iverson with Robert Iverson coming second, May 21.
