Borden still has volunteer drivers who will drive people to Saskatoon or other towns for appointments. The drivers used to belong to Community Services but that is no longer in existence so they volunteer through the Saskatoon Health Region. The cost for a volunteer driver to Saskatoon is $35 and the client pays any parking fees and if it is over a meal time they are to pay for the meal. Cost to Radisson is $10, Langham $15 and to Dalmeny $20. The only drivers right now are Ivan Youchezin and Lorraine Olinyk.

The Borden fire department and volunteers are hosting the Saskatchewan Firefighters Curling Association provincial curling championships Feb. 8 - 19. Even though Borden does not have a curling rink they will be holding the event using the Langham Curling Rink, with the banquet in Borden Community Centre.

Ian Wainwright is the president of the SSFA and this winter's edition of the championships will be the 55th year of the event. They are expecting at least a dozen rinks from across the province and the winning team will go on to the National Firefighters Curling Championship in March. On the team from Borden is Ian Wainwright, David Buckingham, Eric Pearce and Barry Saunders.

The opening ceremonies will have a parade of curlers led by a bagpiper and they will have signs made up for each team. They are in need of volunteer drivers to help shuttle the curlers to and from the rink and to the banquet on Saturday, so give any of the four curlers a call if you could do any driving.

The Borden senior boys' volleyball team played in Langham's tournament Oct. 26 and 27. After some hard-fought games in the round robin, they ended up playing Langham in the finals and were unable to defeat the host team, coming away with a second place plaque. Even if they didn't win first place, they played some great games without three of their players who were curling in Lloydminster.

Borden is hosting a tournament this weekend, Nov. 2 and 3, but because the Borden gym is not completely renovated yet, they will be hosting it in Colonsay.

The junior girls played in Hanley, placing fourth. Their playoffs were Oct. 30 at VCA in Osler. The senior girls played at Christian Academy in Saskatoon and received the third place plaque, playing very well and losing some of their games by a narrow margin.

The three-tier cake was made of Rice Krispies with flowers all around it.

Daughter Nadine introduced family present, and the best man Don Irwin was there along with bridesmaids Elaine Saunders and Delores Simpson. Son Nathan was wearing his dad's wedding suit and his wife Christine was wearing Mary's going away outfit. Sharon Assman also spoke of the many trips and get-togethers over the years.

Mary and Ron both thanked everyone for coming and for helping decorate and plan the evening. They said how lucky they are to live in such a great community. Ron said he has been on council or reeve of the RM since 1985 and has never had an argument with any ratepayer.
