Many volunteers soon had enough wood sawed, split and stacked Oct. 5 to last three years for Curtis and Carol Crabb of Borden. Curtis has had two surgeries and chemo for a brain tumour and just came out of the hospital Oct. 4, after his last surgery.
The woodcutting bee was co-ordinated by Tony Martens and over 60 signed the booklet with most of them out sawing up the fallen trees on Isobel Tracksell's land by Borden, hauling them to Crabbs and then, with the help of an electric splitter from Saskatoon and some with axes, split and stacked enough wood to fill two large sheds, two truckloads and a woodpile.
Ladies from the Riverbend Fellowship and United churches served a noon meal in the community centre, with the extra baking going to the Crabbs. A birthday cake was sent out to Carol for her birthday Oct. 6. Everyone in the community wishes Curtis all the best.
A bridal shower was held Oct. 6 in the Borden Seniors' Room for Brandy Kardash, who is marrying Shaun Dyck of Borden Oct. 12. MC Sharon Assman welcomed everyone, then introduced the head table - Brandy, her mom Donna Kardash, Shaun's mom Claudia Dyck, a friend of the bride Tasha Reiter and Sharon's granddaughter, Sepeideh Assman who will be flower girl.
Marlese Assman had a game on how well guests knew the bride and groom. Three ladies won prizes for having the most correct answers. Brandy is originally from Haines Junction, Yukon. She is studying to be an electrician and has no siblings.
After Sharon told about the origin of bridal showers and the customs of bouquets and wedding rings, there was another game. Helen Sutherland read a poem on The Art of a Good Marriage, then presented the cash gift and card from the community. Brandy opened the gifts which were passed around. She thanked everyone for all of the beautiful gifts and then everyone enjoyed lunch and beverages.
The senior boys' and junior girls' volleyball teams will be in Colonsay Oct. 9 for the second annual Megabowl, which is a charity event between the two schools to raise money for the Children's Hospital Foundation. This year Allan School is joining in.
Last year the two schools raised $3,006. Borden School is selling paper volleyballs in local businesses. They need door prizes, donations and Hats for Hope Day, a day students pay $2 to wear a hat at school.
At Megabowl, there will be a guest speaker, a mascot dance-off, 50/50 draw, door prizes, dignitary coin tosses and crowd activities during timeouts. Borden junior girls play Colonsay at 3:15 p.m. and the senior boys play Colonsay at 6 p.m. Then there is the cheque presentation and the One Shining Moment photo/video montage of the day.
For surpassing their goal and last year's total raised for the Terry Fox Run, Borden School SRC has different events planned. Pudding Drop took place Sept. 30 and the senior boys' volleyball leg shave and toe gloss Oct. 8., along with a candy jar guess at noon and baby food and a not-so-happy happy meal at response time. Coming up are Pie in the Face Oct. 16 and a day to dress up the new teachers Oct. 18. Looks like the school has lots of fun things happening.
The magazine fundraiser kicked off Oct. 3 and will go for two weeks.
Sasktel phone books can be recycled at school.
The six grads - Rebecca Cutting, Avery Fairbrother, Deidre Hebig, Ryan Howell-Turgeon, Myron Metanchuk and Connor Wainwright - held a very successful bottle drive Oct. 6. The senior boys' volleyball team play in Colonsay Oct. 9, Perdue Oct. 19 and Hepburn Oct. 25 and 26. Their home tournament will be Nov. 2.
