Indigenous Peoples Day celebrated in Battleford

Various traditional dancers delighted the crowd.

BATTLEFORD — Indigenous communities came together Thursday to celebrate the first National Indigenous Peoples Day hosted in Battleford with songs, dances and poetry.

Dancers, garbed in colourful regalia, performed dances that are often seen in competitive and traditional powwows.

Some of the dances were the jingle dress, chicken and fancy shawl, which showed the unique and rich culture of First Nations and other Indigenous peoples of Canada.

Indigenous poet Ecoaborijanelle read her selected works while drummers serenaded the crowd with traditional songs.
