Humboldt had a unique experience on April 6 with the Watoto Children’s Choir performing at the St. Augustine Church.

The 18 singer group that performed in Humboldt is one of seven that are currently traveling the world on six month tours. This particular group is traveling across Canada with performers ranging in age from seven to 12 accompanied by 11 adults, says Canadian team leader, Tonny Mwesigwa, with the choir.

Mwesigwa says their tour started in Toronto with the group heading west to B.C.

Watoto sends different groups out to perform with groups touring six continents since 1994.

The Watoto church was founded by Canadian couple, Gary and Marilyn Skinner, after they moved to Kampala, Uganda in 1984 and now have over 3,000 children in their care, says Mwesigwa.

Over 1,000 children have graduated out of their care, he says, with the young people moving on to post-secondary education.

While this is an amazing opportunity for the children, each child only does one six month tour with the choir while still continuing their schooling.

After the tour is over, they will go back to their normal life of school work living in the Watoto community.
