Battlefords Wildlife Federation hosted the Region 2 Henry Kelsey horn measurers' clinic March 24.

The clinic is held every few years to help those who wish to become Henry Kelsey scorers. The clinic walks the students through the process of measuring all types of big game animals.

The instructors for the workshop were Ab England of Lloydminster, Brett Siedle of Medstead, Glen Stewart of Cut Knife and North Battleford's Larry Mackrell.

The students came from all around the Nortnest. Three were from the Kindersley branch, two from the Witchecan branch and Unity, Marsden and North Battleford branches were also represented. The 12 students started the day with classroom instruction on the procedure that must be followed to measure big game trophies. The students were then fed a beef on a bun dinner.

The afternoon was spent with hands on training on how to measure big game trophies such as the elk, white-tailed and mule deer, bear and moose. After a few hours of learning, the students were given a written exam. The students then were asked to measure two different big game animals and pass in their scores to be judged by the instructors.

All of the students will be notified of their results of the two-part exams. If they pass the exams the students then will become branch scorers for their respective branches for two years. After that they may write another set of exams to become Henry Kelsey measurers.

Helping to ensure the success of the class were Jim Schmidt, Kevin Guttormson, Brad Dah and the Battlefords Wildlife Federation.

Look forward to the next event on our calendar the 67th annual Battlefords Wildlife Federation Smoker, held this year April 21st.

See ya all walkin' the wildlife trail.
