A new Chief elected at Moosomin First Nation

Moosomin voters made a big change at the top in their band election held last week.

MOOSOMIN FN - Moosomin First Nation has a new Chief after elections last week.

Cheryl Kahpeaysewat is the winner, defeating the longtime incumbent Brad Swiftwolfe in the election held on the reserve. In a statement on Facebook, Chief Swiftwolfe extended his best wishes, saying the “people have spoken”.

“Congratulations to our newly elected Chief Cheryl Kahpeaysewat, I will support her, I will encourage her and most importantly believe in her. I also want to congratulate our re-elected council and our three new council. Special thanks to our outgoing council for all their years of service.”

In her remarks on Facebook, Kahpeaysewat said "I would like to thank you all for your incredible support on our success. We begin this journey together. As I walk through the doors of office, I will walk with you in my heart. Hiy hiy."

Elected to the band council are Will Blind, Gage Bird, Iver Swiftwolfe, Harry Moosomin, Fabian Swiftwolfe, Preston Weenie, Lance Myo and Jamie Mooswa.

In a statement on Facebook, Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs extended their congratulations to the new Moosomin Chief and Council, and also paid tribute to the outgoing leadership.

“Congratulations to Moosomin First Nation's new leadership! BATC is deeply committed to the nation's we serve, and the community around us. Thank you to Chief Brad and the previous council members for a great couple of years. We look forward to working with the new Chief and Council and the members of Moosomin.”
