Alberta Clipper causing bad highway conditions around Battlefords

Travel not recommended towards the Lloydminster area

Highway conditions have deteriorated further as of the noon hour.

THE BATTLEFORDS - The Blizzard of ‘22  was making an impact on the Battlefords and area on Monday morning.

Snow and wind gusts were being reported in the area and road conditions have deteriorated rapidly. Roads surrounding the Lloydminster area, including Highway 16, were listed as “travel not recommended”, meanwhile roads east of Maidstone were still reporting winter conditions and swirling or drifting snow as of 11:30 a.m. this morning.

Much of Highway 26 was also reporting “travel not recommended”, with all the roads surrounding Turtleford and St. Walburg carrying this warning. Highways 14 and 21 surrounding Unity were also not recommended for travel.

By the noon hour, "travel not recommended" warnings had extended to all of Highway 16 west of the Battlefords as well as east of the Battlefords to Maymont. All roads in and out of the Battlefords were now listed as "travel not recommended" as of 12:15 p.m.

SGI has issued its tips to travellers on the road in a Twitter post. They urge people to “stay put if you can”. If you must head out, SGI reminds people to remember to Increase following distance and reduce speed, leave earlier to give yourself more time, and clean off windows and lights.

In a news release Saskatchewan RCMP is urging people to avoid unnecessary travel in poor weather conditions. Drivers are asked to check road conditions before travelling and to stay home if travel is not recommended on their route. If you absolutely must travel, ensure you have plenty of gas, a fully charged cell phone, food, water, and extra warm clothing packed.
