The Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in Antigonish, N.S. are fast approaching and Humboldt’s Samantha Fisher and Englefeld’s Tia Zimmerman are excitedly waiting to board that plane to Nova Scotia.
The local swimmers will be competing as part of Team Saskatchewan with Fisher competing in 25m, 50 m, and 100 m freestyle and 25m, 50 m, and 100 m backstroke, and Zimmerman competing in the 25m and 50 m butterfly, 25 breaststroke, and 400 freestyle.
It is an awesome feeling to be part of team, they say with help from coaches, parents, and sponsors getting them to the national event.
Zimmerman is being sponsored by Schulte Industries, MD Seeds, and the Village of Englefeld and Fisher is being sponsored by the Canalta Hotel.
The duo also hope to get some sightseeing in with the team going out together to see some Nova Scotia sights. This includes some surprise trips that Zimmerman is eager to see, she says.
Fisher and Zimmerman will join over 900 other athletes and 290 coaches, officials and mission staff at the games.
The games feature nine events, including athletics, basketball, bocce, golf, rhythmic gymnastics, power lifting, soccer, softball and swimming.
