A fire in an apartment building at 1191 – 99th St. forced the evacuation of one floor of residents at about 1:20 p.m. Thursday.
According to the North Battleford Fire Department the fire started in a trash can and spread to a nearby sofa. Investigation revealed an ashtray had been dumped into the can before being fully extinguished.
The floor was evacuated while the fire was brought under control and the smoke was cleared. WPD Ambulance staff attended, but all residents examined were released at the scene.
NBFD says the building did have working smoke alarms.
