A number of area kids got together on the weekend to do their part to help the animals.
They formed a club and, with a little bit of help from their families, organized a bake sale at the Territorial Mall Saturday afternoon to raise money for the local SPCA animal shelter.
The students were mainly Grade 6 students (one was Grade 5), from Ecole Monseigneur Blaise Morand and also Bready School.
The kids pointed to Holly Kryzanowski as having initially come up with the idea to help the animals.
"I was watching the news one day and I saw a whole bunch of animals at this local animal shelter in Ontario," Holly said.
The animals had to be put down because there wasn't enough room there, she said, and she didn't want that to happen here.
The students, who knew each other from school, got together quickly and formed an SPCA Club to raise money for the animals at the shelter in the Battlefords, so that those animals would not have to face a similar situation.
On sale were a number of baked items, many of them home baked. They included cupcakes, cakes, various cookies, tarts, muffins and other items.
The kids reported brisk sales. They were also helped along by a $100 donation from Jeanines' Coiffures, one of the mall's businesses.
The final total raised on Saturday was $328.23, an amount presented later that same day to the Battlefords Humane Society.
