It was a brief court appearance Monday for Red Pheasant First Nation chief Stewart Baptiste.

Facing a charge of breach of probation, Baptiste was in North Battleford Provincial Court again, but his case has been adjourned to Dec. 17.

Baptiste appeared on his own behalf, and explained to Judge Lorna Dyck that he recently retained counsel who had requested the adjournment.

The Red Pheasant chief has been in court on numerous occasions on various charges over the past several months. He still awaits trial for impaired driving in Biggar next year. This past June in North Battleford Provincial Court, he received a suspended sentence and probation for two breach of probation and driving while suspended charges.

As they did in June, several women from Red Pheasant First Nation were protesting outside the courthouse Monday, carrying placards in opposition to Baptiste.

The women have continued to call on Baptiste to step down and say he has failed to come through on pledges to turn Red Pheasant into a dry reserve or address other issues such as housing conditions.
