NIPAWIN — The Boreal Area Regional Waste Authority Inc. (BARWA) has begun seeking proposals from qualified vendors to facilitate the decommissioning of nine waste disposal cells at the BARWA landfill.
The landfill, started in 1973, has nine cells underground, not including the one active cell. The Waste Authority has been working to decommission the old sites since about 2017.
To officially close a landfill cell, regular monitoring has to be in place which includes checking any potential impact on the environment using piezometer testing as the cell decomposes.
“We’re just right now calling for bids on project management,” said Rennie Harper, BARWA’s chair. “We would hope to start sometime in June 2022, but all that is sort of flexible depending on who comes and what supplies we need.”
Earlier this year BARWA received about $2.6 million from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program for the job.
This included receiving approximately $1.42 million federally, about $1.19 million provincially, with BARWA responsible for covering the remaining approximate $948,000.
The tender application closes Dec. 21, with the bid being slated to be assigned by the board in January.
