The Battleford town detachment of the RCMP released statistical data for the third quarter of 2012 for the Oct. 15 council meeting, showing numbers that are generally up.

Though many of the numbers are ambiguous, as they may be as much from self-generated work as increased crime, there were a few encouraging signs.

For one, youth involvement in crime is significantly down from the same period last year, form 31 to 24. Break and enters are also down, for the quarter and the year-to-date, as are criminal code offences.

Up significantly are property offences, drug offences and liquor act violations, which all saw increases for both the quarter and the year-to-date.

Other statistics are more ambiguous. Provincial traffic offences fell by nearly half from last year, from 97 to 51, but this year's total of 292 is still significantly higher than last year's 250. Drunk driving charges were in a similar situation, with higher year-to-date numbers and lower numbers from the third quarter of 2012 than 2011's.

Total calls for service, however are significantly up, from 779 to 973.

The three-year survey of quarterly data shows few overall trends. Impaired driving offences have showed slight yearly declines, from 12 to nine to 2012's six. Liquor act violations have, however, increased from one to four to eight. Other statistics seem to have gone up and down erratically from year to year.
