The Town of Battleford has just under $1 million worth of street improvements planned for 2013, over and above the regular pot hole patrol and slurry projects.

Considered "local improvements" under provincial legislation, 70 per cent will be paid by the town, using gas tax revenue, and 40 per cent will be paid by the residents of the streets involved. They can either prepay their share, or add the fee to their property taxes over a seven-year period with interest.

To receive asphalt overlay street improvements, for a total of $774,000, are:

Riverbend Crescent from 5th Ave. W. to 35th St.;

Janet Place;

37th St. from 4th Ave. W. to Gabruch Crescent;

36th St. from 4th Ave. W to 3rd Ave. W.;

Janet Drive from Riverbend Crescent to 38th St.;

4th Ave. W. from Riverbend Crescent to 35th St.;

Gabruch Crescent; and

3rd Ave. from 35th St. to Riverbend Crescent.

To receive super micro surfacing street upgrades, for a total of $206,000, are:

20th St. from 1st Ave. W to Central Ave.;

18th St. from 2nd Ave. W. to Central Ave.;

17th St. from 2nd Ave. W to 1st Ave. E.;

1st Ave. E from 18th St. S. (property line of Block 62, Lot 20) to north of 18th St. (cul de sac); and

1st Ave. E from 17th St. to 18th St.

Having received approval from the Local Government Committee on its plans, the town will now notify property owners of the plans and the associated costs. They will have the right to petition the town.

The next step will be tendering the work.

Mayor Derek Mahon said between asphalt overlay and micro surfacing, the lesser expensive item is micro surfacing. He noted there are three Rs when it comes to street repairs - renewal, rehabilitation and reconstruction, with the most expensive being reconstruction.
