Nature Saskatchewan's Stewards of Saskatchewan programs are gearing up for another great season on the lookout for any of Saskatchewan's prairie Species at Risk.
Migrating SAR are making their way back to Saskatchewan and the tewards are asking everyone to keep a sharp eye out; especially for Burrowing Owls, Piping Plovers, Loggerhead Shrikes, Sprague's Pipits and Monarch Butterflies.
Habitat Co-ordinator Ashley Fortney says, "when people think about SAR on the prairies they usually think of the Burrowing Owl. That is great because Burrowing Owls are at critically low numbers in our province, she says. However, Saskatchewan has a large number of species that are in danger of extinction, including some that may be surprising such as Northern Leopard Frogs, Tiger Salamanders and Barn Swallows. These species can appear to be abundant in specific places, while overall their populations are decreasing."
Nature Saskatchewan is asking anyone who sees a SAR to call the toll-free number at 1-800-667-HOOT(4668). Reporting a sighting helps to monitor SAR, and provides valuable information for the conservation of these species. Information is not shared without permission.
