The Battlefords Beaver Blues Hockey Club wants to serve beer at their home games at the Battleford Arena.

A letter to Battleford Town Council asking for their support in the liquor licence application process met with approval by councillors.

The club suggested three scenarios – a beer booth at either the southeast or southwest corner of the arena area (not in the lobby) where patrons can purchase beer to take back to their seats, or a beer garden area in the northeast corner.

Councillors preferred not to see beer booths near the doors to the dressing rooms. They preferred the idea of selling beer from the northeast corner, but not as a beer garden where patrons would have to sit and would not be able to see the game.

Councillors agreed with the hockey club that they would prefer to see the whole rink licensed, similar to that of the North Battleford Civic Centre. Patrons would be able to purchase a beverage and return to their seats to continue watching the game.

Councillors also said they would want to see appropriate security along with the sale of beer.

Gaining approval from the Town of Battleford is the first step in the club obtaining a liquor licence from the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority.

The request to the Town came from Brett Michnik, Battleford Beaver Blues president, and Jon Kachuk, vice-president.

As the 2015-16 hockey season approaches, they wrote, the Battleford Beaver Blues Hockey Club continues to look for ways to enhance their fans’ experience during their hockey games.

The Beaver Blues are part of the Saskatchewan Prairie Hockey League founded in 2010 by a group of teams dedicated to providing quality hockey in small town Saskatchewan.
