Members of the Battlefords RCMP detachment were involved in a traffic blitz Friday and Saturday in northern Saskatchewan.
The Wood Buffalo RCMP along with other law enforcement partners conducted a traffic operation on Secondary Highway 965 between Fort McMurray, Alta. and La Loche. This road is open in the winter months only and is frequently used, according to RCMP.
Other RCMP contributing to the operation were Saskatchewan detachments from La Loche and Swift Current. Other law enforcement partners included Alberta Commercial Vehicle Enforcement. Members of the operation were out conducting roving traffic enforcement, according to a press release.
The Alberta RCMP results of the traffic enforcement initiative included checking approximately 300 vehicles which resulted in: one impaired driving offence, one firearms offence, one charge under the Controlled Drug and Substance Act, one charge of breach of conditions, two outstanding warrants executed, a 24-hour suspension issued, 23 tickets under the Traffic Safety Act issued for different offences and four vehicles were towed for various issues.
After checking approximately 180 vehicles, the Saskatchewan RCMP patrols resulted in: one refusal charge, 10 charges under the Alcohol Gaming Regulations Act, seven tickets issued under the Traffic Safety Act, 11 various Criminal Code charges, three outstanding warrants executed, a 24-hour suspension issued and one vehicle impounded.
RCMP remind motorists that although ice roads are temporary the rules of the road and the highway traffic act still apply.
