Blaine Lake Community Association held a public meeting two weeks following its annual general meeting. The meeting was a result of the poor attendance at the annual general meeting raising the concern of disbanding the organization due to lack of directors. The BLCA constitution states the board must consist of a minimum of 12 and maximum of 24 volunteer directors; the AGM resulted in only 11.
The Blaine Lake Community Association was formed in 2001 to promote cultural, sports and recreational activities and to keep the community's recreational facilities operating in good condition.
Facilities operated by BLCA include: a modern, four-sheet curling rink with kitchen and lounge; a fully equipped skating arena with kitchen and Zamboni; a nine-hole golf course; tennis courts; and a sports ground with ball diamonds, pavilion, concession booth and electrified camping stalls. The BLCA also organizes hockey, figure skating, curling clinics, minor ball and swimming lessons as well as numerous other community events.
"I have always been a big supporter of the BLCA," says BLCA president Jim Joanette. "Becoming an umbrella group has benefitted every facility and made us a positive example to other communities."
"The efforts of BLCA has made the operation of the various facilities more effective and more economical," commented Blaine Lake Mayor Andy Ciona, commending the non-profit organization's board of directors for their hard work and dedication over the years.
Following discussion and question period, the floor was open to nominations. Ten new individuals were added to the slate of directors. The BLCA board consists of Larry Androsoff, Glen Bowie, Bev Breland, Bob Burletoff, Patti Ciona, Christie Dargin-Linsley, Bert Dyck, Karen Fiala, Barry Glencross, Dale Horner, Angela Johnson, Jim Joanette, Mike Linsley, Barb Mascho, Kerrie McLean, Wendy Onishenko, Lorne Popov, Aubrey Reban, Chris Rendall, Melvy Sanchez and Carly Warkentin.
The BLCA will continue to operate for another year under the guidance and direction of the named directors. Secretary/treasurer Laurie Cheveldayoff advises the board and is extremely efficient in identifying various grants available for the organization.
Watch for upcoming BLCA events within the community.
