A nine-year-old boy testing the thickness of the ice on the North Saskatchewan River Wednesday found himself in "hot" water.

Battlefords RCMP received a report of the young boy walking on the river ice and by the time they, North Battleford Fire Department and WPD Ambulance responded the boy had fallen into the water.

The child was taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons before being released into the care of his parents, police say.

RCMP advise the ice cover on the river remains thin with numerous open areas that remain treacherous.
