Bridge closed for suspicious article

A suspicious article left on one of the bridges across the North Saskatchewan River caused a traffic backup Tuesday evening.

At 5:52 p.m., an announcement was sent out that RCMP would be immediately closing the westbound bridge from North Battleford on Highway 16 due to an investigation into a suspicious backpack left on the bridge.

RCMP advised the bridge would be closed for an undetermined length of time.

By 7:51 p.m. RCMP advised the flow of traffic on Highway 16 at North Battleford had been restored and the bridge was once again open.

There were no details released by RCMP on the suspicious article.

North Battleford Fire Department were also on the scene for more than a half hour, with three firefighters and a pumper, along with North Battleford Bylaws personnel. They conducted traffic control.

The fire department listed the incident type as a bomb scare, but no bomb.
