BRUNO — Kevin Pulvermacher of the Bruno Wildlife Federation has been presented with the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation’s Clayton Young Memorial Award.
The award is given annually to six recipients across the province, each from a different region.
To qualify, the nominated individual must have had a profound positive influence towards “ensuring the wildlife legacy we leave to our children surpasses that which we inherited” through volunteerism.
“It’s a humbling experience,” Pulvermacher said. “I do volunteer a lot, but there are lots of people who do.”
Pulvermacher currently serves as president of the Bruno branch, and led the effort to transform Bruno’s former curling rink building into an archery range and clubhouse for the Federation.
Before the club made use of the building, it sat empty for a number of years.
“It’s a natural fit, it was an empty building that’s derelict and it’s a long narrow building, perfect for indoor archery.”
The archery range was finalized just before the COVID-19 pandemic began, which Pulvermacher said has caused a pause into their long-term plans, which includes getting youth involved through the school.
“We have to set up certified couches and get that whole program going,” he said. “With COVID, everything was put on hold, but that’s our hope.”
Typically, the Clayton Young Memorial Award would be presented in-person at the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation’s annual convention, but due to COVID-19, that couldn’t happen.
Instead, the winners were announced in a virtual convention on Feb. 12, and Pulvermacher received the award in a small outdoor ceremony put on by the Bruno chapter on Feb. 13.
Presenting it to him was Jeff Mark, treasurer of the chapter.
“Kevin’s done many stuff in the community for a number of years, certainly with the Wildlife Club he’s been very instrumental,” Mark said.
“He helps lots of young people get started with hunting. They come out and he mentors them. He’s certainly instrumental in helping funding for the school for some of their outdoor trips as well.”
