The Town of Battleford is in the midst of budget deliberations for 2013.

Town council held a budget session Monday to go through the numbers. A general operating budget summary was presented, with Town Administrator Sheryl Ballendine running through the numbers with mayor Derek Mahon and members of council.

The summary projects total revenues of $7,151,742, with total expenditures of $5,233,036.

Expenditures include $1,174,491 for recreational and cultural services, $1,094,208 for utilities and $1,052,307 for transportation. Protective services are estimated at $725,209.

The change in surplus is estimated in the budget at $1,918,706. Operating fund usage - essentially the 2013 capital budget costs - is estimated at $3,574,494, and appropriated fund usage estimated at $1507,575.

That left a deficit of $148,213, according to the general operating budget summary. Getting the books back to even is now the challenge town council must figure out.

The plan is for another budget session to be held, likely next week, as the town crunches the numbers and comes up with scenarios for ways to balance the books and meet the expenditures for the year.
