All else being equal, a baby has a one in 1,461 chance of being born on a leap day. This year, one baby in the local area beat the odds and was born Feb. 29.

Kayden Alexander Spencer, born to Kelsey and Gillian Spencer of Turtleford, became the Battleford Union Hospital's Leap Year Baby when he was born at 7:45 a.m. The date of arrival was a surprise to his parents, as he wasn't due until mid-March.

The BUH Foundation awarded Kayden a star with his name and birth date on the "A Star is Born Dedication Wall" by the entrance to the Women's Health and Birthing Centre to commemorate the birth. Kelsey and Gillian stated the star was "a wonderful way to celebrate the birth of your child."

Stars can also be purchased from the BUHF office for $25 with all proceeds going to help enrich patient care in the Women's Health and Birthing Centre.
