Bus drivers who pick up and drop off students to Battleford Central School are concerned about the safety of their riders.
Drivers from First Student Canada and Southland Bus Lines have sent letters signed by several drivers asking the Town of Battleford to consider solutions to the make the street in front of BCS safer for children. Parents parking along the yellow curb to pick up their children is the cause of their concern.
Town councillors said they will be looking into the issue and any resolutions will have to involve the Living Sky School Division as well. In addition to parents parking on the street, there is also a concern about teachers parking on town property and in the Court of Queen’s Bench area, they said.
The bus drivers who signed the letters offered three suggestions.
The first was to give out tickets.
“The signs are up and the curb is yellow. And yet no one seems to know what this means,” said the letter.
The second suggestion was to widen the street on the school side.
“Designate where parents can park, this will eliminate the children running between parked cars and in front of traffic,” it stated.
The third suggestion was to restrict traffic on the street Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. and from 3 to 4 p.m.
