An effort by Melfort’s city council to improve late night cab service has had no effect so far.
The city changed the rules to allow cab companies to charge $18 for any ride – an increase of $7 – from the hours of 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. in an effort to provide an incentive to improve services. That change was made Jan. 16.
“Our assessment of it is things haven’t improved, but we haven’t had too many negative comments either,” said Rick Lang, Melfort’s mayor, at the May 15 council meeting.
According to a memo from the city’s staff, the city’s cab companies have not changed their operating hours, but they will make trips for those with prior bookings.
“As far as changing hours of operation or any of that and dictating those, we’re not at that point yet,” Lang said. “We may get there, but we’re not there yet.”
