A man wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for parole violation and armed robbery offences, one of which was in Saskatchewan, has been arrested.
RCMP arrested Tyson Darren Leeder, age 26, who was last known to be of Lethbridge, Alta., in Rocky Mountain House, Alta. Wednesday morning. He was wanted for parole violation, as well as for armed robbery offences in Invermay, Sask. and Somerset, Man.
Leeder was staying in a hotel room in Rocky Mountain House and he was believed to be armed.
On the scene were the RCMP Emergency Response Team, a police helicopter and police dogs. Emergency response negotiators were able to speak to Leeder and convinced him to surrender just before 1 a.m.
The search for Leeder was prompted by an incident in the Airdrie area Sunday allegedly involving Leeder and a member of the Beiseker RCMP detachment. An RCMP vehicle was damaged and the member was injured.
At around 7:30 p.m. that day, the RCMP member stopped a white Ford F350 truck bearing Alberta license plate WVE 943 for speeding through Irricana, Alta. The truck had multiple occupants. After stopping, the truck immediately reversed and struck the police car, causing significant damage, according to the RCMP.
The truck then attempted to flee the area and was pursued by the RCMP member. The truck eventually came to a stop and as the RCMP member exited his police car, the truck reversed from a significant distance and rammed the vehicle a second time, disabling the police vehicle.
The RCMP member was able to avoid being hit by the truck and returned to the police car before it was hit. The Ford F350 then fled the scene and the RCMP member was transported to hospital in Calgary, where he was treated for his injuries.
It was later discovered the plate on the Ford truck was stolen from a business in Redcliffe, Alta, while the Ford F350 itself had been reported stolen March 30 from Perdue.
At the time of the arrest police also located the Ford F350, which had been parked outside The House Hotel. Also apprehended was a 17-year-old wiman described as missing by the Canadian Police Information Centre.
Leeder remained in custody in Rocky Mountain House Wednesday and is to be returned to prison on the parole violation. He awaits further court appearances on the armed robbery and other offences.
