Car impounded for seven days

MAIDSTONE — Maidstone RCMP are reporting a week with 59 occurrences between Sunday, April 3 and Saturday, April 09. Some of the most common reports received were related to traffic collisions, animal calls and general assistance to the public.

Call breakdown: Sunday - nine; Monday - five; Tuesday - three; Wednesday - 10; Thursday - eight; Friday - 16; Saturday – eight.

April 3, on Highway 688 in the RM of Wilton, the Enhanced Policing Unit was on patrol and stopped a heavy vehicle hauling fluid. The truck was initially stopped for a traffic violation, but upon further investigation the driver was found to not have a valid driver’s licence. The driver, from Shellbrook, was charged under the Traffic Safety Act.

April 3, a report of fraud was received. The complainant received a suspect email from an individual posing as iTunes. The email stated that a refund would be provided and that they required a social insurance number along with a credit card number. This is a fraud, and has no ties to iTunes or Apple. Please beware of these types of frauds and report any similar instances to RCMP and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (http://www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/index-eng.htm).

April 4, horses on Highway 17 near the 10-mile corner was reported during the early morning hours. With the assistance of the Lloydminster RCMP, patrols were made. The horses were gone upon arrival of police. No follow up calls were received.

April 6, Maidstone RCMP were on patrol on Highway 17 when a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed was encountered. The vehicle was doing 161 km/h. The highway is posted 100 km/h. The driver, a Lloydminster man, was stopped and charged under the Traffic Safety Act for one count of speeding in excess of 50 km/h over the speed limit. The driver’s car was also impounded for seven days. In Saskatchewan, there are a variety of reasons a person’s vehicle may be impounded under the Traffic Safety Act.  Repeat offenders can have their vehicle impounded between three and seven days depending on the offence. In this instance, it has been regulated that a vehicle travelling at any speed over 50 km/h in excess of the posted speed limit will be impounded for seven days on the first and every instance thereafter.

April 7, a report of a moose versus vehicle collision near Paynton was received through 911. Police attended and found significant damage to the pickup truck. The driver and passenger, both from out of province, were uninjured.

April 8, a stolen dirt bike was reported to police. The dirt bike is a red and white 2013 Honda CRF 250x with low mileage and is in pristine condition. The dirt bike was stolen from the Hillmond area and is currently still missing. April 8, a 911 call was received of a possible impaired driver on Township Road 482 near Lashburn. Maidstone RCMP attended and located the suspect vehicle. A woman from the Waseca area was arrested without incident and was charged under the Traffic Safety Act for one count of driving without a valid licence. Criminal Code charges are pending at this time. The vehicle she was operating has been impounded for 30 days.

April 9, during a traffic stop on Highway 17 north of Lloydminster, Sask. Maidstone RCMP arrested four youth during a controlled drug and substances investigation. One youth was charged under the Alcohol and Gaming Regulations Act for open beverage alcohol. Another youth has been released for court and charges are pending.
