Carlton Trail College handed out $41,000 in scholarships and awards on Dec. 15 with their awards dinner.

Forty-five students were recognized for academic performance as well as, for some awards, financial need and early application scholarships.

Shelley Romanyszyn-Cross, VP Academics with the College, says these scholarships are fundamental to these students, many of them with young families. Being unable to work during their schooling can be financially difficult and Romanyszyn-Cross they are very glad to be able to help their students.

“It’s an opportunity to award the good work that they’ve done but it’s also an opportunity for them to get a few more dollars in their bank accounts.”

Sandra Korte received the Office Administration Performance scholarship during the ceremony and spoke about the impact these funds will have on her education.

Korte, who also has a young family, was happy to continue her education close to home and show her daughters that anyone can go back and expand their education.

Financial stress can many times be the reason that students do not go back to school. To have that financial support behind them means a lot, says Korte.

There are many faces behind the thousands of dollars that were given out that evening.

Val Koroluck says the support from regional donors is paramount to assisting these students.

“Businesses and organizations and individuals really support the power of education by investing in our scholarship programs.”

Although there was a lot of cheques given out during the evening, there is always more that can be done, says Koroluck.

“It’s a really great way to support learning in our province and encourage our students to stay in our region for their education.”

Having these programs in the region means more students staying within the area and that also means more local workers at the end of the programs, says Koroluck.

Koroluck says the Government of Saskatchewan is also a big proponent of these scholarships by matching funds through the Saskatchewan Innovation and Opportunities Scholarship.

The awards dinner itself is a good way for the students, as well as the donors, to be recognized for their achievements and hard work, says Romanyszyn-Cross.
