CARROT RIVER — A byelection to elect a new mayor in Carrot River has been postponed in light of the public risk COVID-19 poses.
"I think we can safely say that we can delay holding the regular poll of the byelection until [it's] deemed safe to go ahead," said Coun. Dennis Letendre, who's serving as the town's deputy mayor.
The byelection was planned for March 25. The two candidates, Ila Boehm and Brock Irvine, were consulted before Carrot River's council made the decision to delay.
The advance poll was held on March 13. The town said there were 33 votes cast. Those ballots will be secured until the votes are counted after a rescheduled byelection.
The Local Government Election Act says a new date must be set within 14 days of the postponement. The date must be within 60 days after the date of the original byelection.
Those wishing to vote by homebound voting can call the town office at 306-768-2515 to discuss their eligibility to vote in that method until the date of the rescheduled byelection.
