Celebrating summer one more time

The sun shone brightly as the community of Maidstone celebrated a little bit more summer during the school community council's Backyard Barbecue and Block Party Sept. 7.

The sun shone brightly as the community of Maidstone celebrated a little bit more summer during the school community council's Backyard Barbecue and Block Party Sept. 7.

Hundreds of hamburgers and hotdogs were served to line ups of students, parents, teachers, family members, friends and community members. Local groups and businesses offered activities for everyone including a dunk tank, half-ton truck of free books, fear factor type challenges, inflatable bouncers and games of skill.

One of the most popular challenges gave everyone an opportunity to see what it feels like to operate a fire hose and shoot at a target as volunteer firefighters reset the targets and helped with the hoses.

Community registration tables were set up behind the school offering various sports and activities available for children and adults in the region. As the sun faded and the mosquitoes came out to feed guests moved into the school gymnasiums.

The pie bingo was moved out of the Legion Hall forone night and into the elementary school gym while an animated movie was projected against the high school gym's screen and popcorn and treats were sold.

It was a chance to visit with friends and meet new students and teachers and celebrate some of the great things Maidstone has to offer to people of all ages.
