RCMP say charges have been laid in death of Onion Lake man following complex and lengthy investigation.
On the afternoon of May 14, 2018, Onion Lake RCMP were notified of a deceased individual located in a slough next to Nine Mile Road approximately 1 km south of the Chief Taylor Road intersection in Onion Lake.
Members attended along with EMS personnel and located an adult male submerged in a slough just off the west side of the road. On arrival it was clear the male was deceased.
The deceased was identified as 31-year-old Shane Opissinow from Onion Lake Cree Nation.
Following a complex and lengthy investigation by RCMP in Onion Lake, North Battleford Provincial General Investigation Section, Major Crimes North, and North Battleford Forensic Investigation Section, it was determined that Mr. Opissinow died as a result of a hit and run collision.
31-year-old Danny Boy Thunder Makokis of Onion Lake Cree Nation has been charged with failing to remain at the scene of a collision, contrary to Section 252 of the Canadian Criminal Code.
Makokis is scheduled to make his first appearance in Onion Lake Provincial Court on April 1.
