Checked swing for big bat

It might be a little longer before the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame installs the largest bat in Canada.

The Battleford and District Parks and Recreation Board presented the minutes from its April 19 meeting at the May 7 council meeting. In them, the board stated the space chosen was "inappropriate for a piece of this size."

The minutes went on to state that the giant bat "would not be an accurate representation of the town, but rather an ad for the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Though Councillor Donna Lavin and Mayor Chris Odishaw both sit on the Parks and Recreation Board, they were not present at the April 19 meeting and did not necessarily support its conclusions. Without endorsing or rejecting the board's conclusions, Odishaw stated the Town would have to see some drawings and detailed plans before it could make a final decision about the bat.

The Baseball Hall of Fame was the subject of another discussion at council though, as the town itself was selected to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in the "community category." The letter that made the announcement explained the induction was "in honour of the contribution to our rich Saskatchewan baseball history by the community of Battleford for the past many decades."

Battlefords MLA Herb Cox wrote a letter stating that he was "delighted" at the news, calling it "one more line in our already impressive resumé that makes Battleford the great town it is."

The Town also finalized the theme for this year's Battleford parade, taking place the night of July 20. The theme, chosen in honour of the Queen's diamond jubilee and the Olympics taking place in London this year, is "A Royal Party." Parade entry forms are available on the Battleford website at Battleford.ca.
